What is Pupil Premium and how does St Mary’s Academy use it?

The pupil premium grant is an allocation of additional funding provided to schools to support specific groups of children who are vulnerable to possible underachievement.  These include pupils who are entitled to free school meals; those looked after by the local authority and the children of armed service personnel.

At St Mary’s Catholic Academy we ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all pupils.  We ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups.  Pupil premium will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify groups or individuals.

How does St Mary’s Catholic Academy use the Pupil Premium?

Governors were aware when they set the budget that funding for schools was subject to change and new pressures; schools, like other areas of the economy, were facing increasing costs but a strictly limited budget.  Governors did not wish to see the pupil premium funding simply replace funding that had been removed elsewhere from the budget.

The Head Teacher has therefore ensured the following actions take place:

  • Pupil tracking systems have been further refined; progress of children who are eligible for pupil premium funding is now closely monitored.  Additionally, pupil involvement in behaviour incidents, pupil punctuality and attendance and exclusions are also now analysed.
  • All teachers are to continue to receive additional non-contact time to allow them to research additional or innovative strategies for raising pupil attainment, especially of groups who may be at risk of not making sustained or good progress.  This is equivalent to one day per week teaching time for 7 staff.
  • All teachers will report and share their developing knowledge to colleagues, ensuring consistency in approaches used across school.  This is completed weekly prior to Teaching & Learning meetings.
  • The Senior Leadership Team analyse performance data, tracking differential attainment of groups and reorganizing staffing and/or resources accordingly.
  • The Head and Deputy will undertake a personal learning review with all pupils eligible for pupil premium funding, meeting with parents/carers if necessary.
  • Partial funding of teaching assistants in some teams to support teaching and learning of children of all abilities.
  • After school, ‘St Mary’s University’ for pupils from Y1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 who have been identified as at risk of not making adequate progress.
  • Additional assessments made by external agencies for pupils who have been identified as at risk of not making progress.
  • Ensuring inclusion by providing subsidised visits/residentials where necessary.
  • Appointment of a Pupil Premium Champion
  • An appointed Governor (KC) given responsibility for overseeing Pupil Premium
