At St Mary’s, we value PSHE as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning. To ensure progression, we use Life to the Full Plus, which is a two strand approach to PSHE and compliments our existing Life to the Full Programme which is used to deliver RSE.
LIFE TO THE FULL PLUS
The first strand is New Sessions, on the topics of transitions, rights and responsibilities, money and careers – all of which mirror the spiral curriculum approach of Life to the Full, where topics are introduced and developed across key stages.
The second strand is Classroom Shorts, short, snappy videos which complement but stand independent from the sessions. Running at around 3-5 minutes, each video connects to a session topic to reinforce and expand upon learning.
Programme Structure
In Life to the Full, we follow a four-stage structure which is repeated and developed across four different learning stages:
- Early Years Foundation Stage is aimed at Nursery and Reception
- Key Stage One is aimed at Years 1 and 2
- Lower Key Stage Two is aimed at Years 3 and 4
- Upper Key Stage Two is aimed at Years 5 and 6
Within each learning stage, there are three Modules which are
based on the Model Catholic RSE Curriculum:
- Created and Loved by God
- Created to Love Others
- Created to Live in Community
Each Module is then broken down into Units of Work.
Within each Unit there are a number of planned sessions which are to be led in the classroom.
Vocabulary
Vocabulary forms a key part of our wider curriculum. Each lesson identifies key
vocabulary to be introduced and discussed within the session.
Oracy
PSHE sessions encourage children to express themselves verbally using full sentences. During whole class and small group discussions children share their thoughts, feelings and
questions using appropriate vocabulary.
