Student Council

At St Mary’s, we believe that leadership isn’t just for adults – it belongs to every child. Our School Council is at the heart of our community, rooted in a whole-school approach that brings Fundamental British Values to life. Rather than just learning about democracy, our pupils experience it firsthand through a rigorous and exciting election process. Each representative is elected to office by their peers, instilling a profound understanding of democratic principles, responsibility and the power of the individual vote from an early age.

Once elected, these young leaders form a dynamic partnership that bridges the gap between the classroom and the staff room. This collaboration between pupils, teachers and the wider school community ensures that we are all working in harmony to make our school an exceptionally safe, vibrant and happy place. By fostering this culture of mutual respect and shared goals, we create an environment where every child feels empowered to achieve their absolute best.

During regular class meetings, every single pupil has a platform to share their innovative ideas and suggestions. These voices are then carried forward by our elected representatives to our formal School Council meetings. Here, the most important issues are debated, solutions are crafted and real change is implemented. At our school, the School Council isn’t just a committee; it is a testament to our commitment to pupil voice and the belief that our children are the architects of our school’s future.
